Hand-made outdoor jackets

Design Concepts for Hand-made Outdoor Jackets

Since 2015 polychromelab engineers Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis in Tyrol. The outdoor lab Alpine Proofs offers quality insight for design concepts for tailor-made outdoor jackets. In this alpine tailor shop we make hand-made designer and outdoor jackets using high-end manufacturing technology. In this video shot by Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis we talk about what we’d like to achieve here.

For hand-made quality apparel you need two things: First, use the right technology. In the polychromelab tailor shop we have machines for ultrasonic welding and high pressure printing and many more. Second, love for details and sure instincts. In delicate handwork we manufacture tailor-made outdoor jackets.

Tyrol Future Day 2016

Starting into Tyrol’s Future Day 2016

We last were on an exhibition some time ago, so we were really excited to be part of Tyrol’s strategic Future Day 2016. Innovative companies from Tyrol and groundbreaking research projects from Tyrol’s academic schools were in the centre of attention at this event. Here’s the video “Leading by Research and Development” with some impressions from Tyrol’s Future Day 2016.

Leading by Research and Development

Being a part of this ensamble of economy and research comes naturally to us. Since the founding of polychromelab we followed a two track strategy: Design, manufacturing and sale via polychromelab’s online shop and store in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis on the one hand, empirical research and structured product development in the Alpine Proof Outdoor Lab on the other hand. Unfortunately, as it is in modern times, one has less time to make one’s statement and this is why customers often get our two track strategy. So we were very happy about the fact that there was plenty of time and interest on Tyrol’s Future Day at Congress Igls to present our mission for the future of polychromelab (and apparel).

Video of the Opening of World’s Highest Outdoor Lab

Location Agency Tyrol and pro.media Agency visited the highest research lab of the world. At the opening all who were involved were there: officials from Tyrol and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, the University of Innsbruck and polychromelab as operator of Alpine Proof Outdoor Lab. In this video our research project is explained.

Windtest Winterjackets in Outdoor Lab

Testing Winterjackets in Extreme Windspeed at Alpine Proof

The market never sleeps. It also never is full. One has to adapt to stay competitive. Every day there’re new innovations. Every innovation creates new target markets itself and hence influences the customer’s demands. For example, windproof winterjackets.

Luckily refining products is something we really like. We forgo some hours of sleep and watch the winterjackets at the windtest in the Alpine Proof outdoor lab, fortunately at home in front of our laptops via webcams. Here the video of the windtest

You can take windspeed from the graphic below to see what conditions the winterjackets have to stand up to. Normally one never has to feel windspeeds of 95 km/h and higher at regular outdoor activities, but it’s nice to know that in case the jacket can stand the wind, while the wear hardly can stay on his feet.

The Beginning

Testing Jackets in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis with Alpine Proof the Beginning

Location, check – concrete foundation, check – wooden platform, check. Three times thanks to Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis for building world’s probably most beautiful and surely highest research station for textile research and testing jackets on Schönjoch, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. But now we should get started.

First we build new, fancy bases for the testing dummies from the former lab on Glungezer. Second we select which outdoor jackets should be tested in the next few months. Then we pack everything in our car. About an hour later we reach the wooden platform enjoying the stunning view on the Upper Inn Valley. Beautiful. Also the weather, but we better start working, before a storm arises or something.

After the Alpine Proof banner is fixed, dummies are positioned and spinning cycles are ready, today’s work is done. But this just was the beginning. We’re collecting first weather data and measurements from the inside of the jackets already. Soon we have a greater insight in the outdoor functionality of our prototypes.

ZDF documentary about jackets and textiles

ZDF shooting team visits alpine laboratory for jackets and textiles

The ZDF shooting team visits the alpine laboratory for jackets and textiles on Mount Glungezer in Tyrol in December 2013. There the tyrolean manufacturer of jackets and textiles, polychromelab, runs the highest research station for applied textile research.

Here some impressions of the ZDF documentary about the Alps of January 2014.

Polychromelab Wins Tyrolean Innovation Award 2012

Video of Tyrolean Innovation Award 2012

Have fun with the video of the Tyrolean Innovation Award 2012!

This is the jury’s statement:

Category: technical innovation / polychromeab, Michele Stinco, Hall in Tirol

Top material, which warms and cools by textile physics. If you are traveling in the mountains, one is often faced with short-term weatherchanges, but also with large temperature fluctuations that can sometimes be 20 or 25 degrees celsius. Who is dressed incorrectly, sweats or shivering usually very fast and raises the load on the human body. Therefore Michele Stinco has developed a reversible laminate which is, made up as a jacket, windproof, waterproof and breathable – but does temperature stabilization by cooling or warming through textile physics with membrane technology providing natural materials. Thus the jacket shifts the power limits of membranes very positively.

The jacket can – as required – be worn on both sides. By 2011, there was no single-layer jacket that must comply with these requirements and could be manufactured in series.
