Sewing without Needle and Thread

Winterjackets – Sewed without Needle and Thread

How do you sew a winterjacket without needle and thread? Polychromelab steps further towards an all local manufacture. Today we present to you our new ultrasonic welding machine.

Apparel manufacturers demand waterproof jackets. To do so they have to consider several things. One of them is the seam of a jacket. But how do you sew two pieces of textile together without making them permeable to water? We do this by using an ultrasonic welding procedure not using any needles and threads at all. This is something what makes a seam more waterproof. Here you’ll learn how the ultrasonic welding procedure works in detail.

We try move all our manufacturing processes to our store TexStilKüche in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. This way we can monitor the manufacturing process more carefully. At the moment we are manufacturing in northern Italy. Distances are short and communication is easy, but in Tyrol with manufacturing right at home we will be able to test new ideas faster and make custom-build products.

Founding an Apparel Comany

Founding in Tyrol – Young Economy

Competing against established apparel companies is difficult. Founding an apparel manufacture is a thing full of risks. As we already described there are many structures in Austria which help young startups to reach a greater audience and get some helpfull advice from the more experienced. Yesterday on the day of women in ecomony hosted by the Young Economy Tyrol (German: Junge Wirtschaft Tirol) we had a chance to do so. After ORF science-buster Werner Gruber we presented reversible jackets by polychromelab. Polychromelab is like exhibit A for women in economy because Elisabeth Frey and Michele Stinco, a woman and a man, are leading the company equally.

At Founder’s Symposium – Coworking Imst

Networking and integration on a local level is of huge importance to young companies. Exactly this was the main topic last week at the Founder’s Symposium of Coworking Imst: the apparel company polychromelab amongst other young companies of the region could present themselves and get to know like-minded.

These were great events to promote polychromelab’s webshop and store. To compete against established giants of the apparel branche this events are the best weapon for startups.

Interview with Wolfgang Langeder – Part 2

About the Way from Inspiration to a Designerjacket

Wolfgang Langeder from the Austrian company Utope is a professional designer, who created the Manta Color Morph Jacket by polychromelab. Last week in part 1 of the interview he talked about his vision of creating a new kind of innovation. This week we dare to take a look deeper inside the designer’s mind.

Maximilian Frey: Why did you use polychromelab’s fabric for the Manta jacket? What did the fabric tell you holding it in your hands the first time?

Wolfgang Langeder: I find this purely functional side of polychromelabs’s fabric very interesting. This fabric is something highly innovative, and basically it is technology that makes the innovation. This agrees very well with my vision for Utope.

“I like the strong connection between polychromelab and nature, and the authenticity that originates right in the life of Lisa and Michele.”

Maximilian Frey: If you like to share your secret with us, were did you get your inspiration? Did polychromelab play a part in your decision?

Wolfgang Langeder: I like the strong connection between polychromelab and nature, and the authenticity that originates right in the life of Lisa and Michele. It was really important to me that the Manta Color Morph Jacket‘s design makes a connection to this and smoothly fits in the overall image of polychromelab.

Maximilian Frey: When you look back on designing this piece of art and on the moment you first saw the prototype, did your eyes glow?

Wolfgang Langeder: When you work on a design, you’re really “close” to the product itself and its details, and you recognise that everything fits together more unconciously. In the final phase then for the first time you have the chance to see the prototype from some distance, and I am glad that the Manta Color Morph Jacket had become such a strong and interesting piece.

Maximilian Frey: Design and fabric, interacting perfectly well. Manta Color Morph embodies the perfection of functionality and elegance. But what should we do with this? Where should we wear this special jacket?

Wolfgang Langeder: I guess that primarily there are situations in the extreme or outdoor range of use when customers wear this jacket. But additionally this jacket is a “style item”, which means that this jacket also could be worn only because of its elegance instead of its functionality.

Maximilian Frey: And what is it that one by any circumstances must not do with the Manta? When would your heart begin to hurt?

Wolfgang Langeder: I am a pragmatist, so I think the purpose of apparel is that it should be worn. Basically everyone should do everything he wants to do with the jacket.

Here you can read the first part of the interview. You can have a look on the Manta Color Morph by Utope and polychromelab here in our webshop. In this post we talked about the Manta Color Morph reversible jacket for women and men.

Interview with Wolfgang Langeder – Part 1

About a Vision to Create a New Kind of Innovation

Wolfgang Langeder from the Austrian company Utope is a professional designer, who created the Manta Color Morph Jacket by polychromelab. I met the visionary and textilie-virtuoso for an interview.

Maximilian Frey: Wolfgang, for everybody who doesn’t know you yet, can you explain what Utope is about?

Wolfgang Langeder: We at Utope want to create a new kind of innovation, something that hasn’t been developed yet. For this we integrate innovative technologies in textiles, that up to now only were components for digital devices, so new kinds of functions and applications for apparel become reality.

Maximilian Frey: How is this even possible, technologies in textiles? You and your team are trying to connect apparel to smartphones. Hopefully one doesn’t has to charge his jacket every evening, does he?

Wolfgang Langeder: No, the jackets doesn’t have to be charged on a daily basis. Our concept is quite different. We use sensors integrated in the jacket measuring specific data (of both body and environment) which are transmitted to the smartphone, processed and made available for use by an app. Because both wearer and apparel are in permanent movement, we work with stretchable electronics which are a basic requirement for integrating technology in apparel. This concept is washable and appropriately safe.

“It’s about essential applications, which occur in nature for adapting to the environment optimally.”

Maximilian Frey: If you look at the Sporty Supaheroe Jacket, you’ll notice that Wolfgang Langeder wants to tell a story with his designs. What’s the story behind the Manta Color Morph Jacket?

Wolfgang Langeder: The story behind the Manta Color Morph Jacket is about the connection of technology and nature. This is the very thing I wish to make transparent to the wearer. If you look at the jacket’s fabric, it’s a hightech textile capable of warming and cooling. These are essential applications, which occur in nature for adapting to the environment optimally.

Additionally, the fabric also has two different sides, which brought me on the trace of an animal which characteristics, because of its elegant and dynamic appaerance, I wanted to “translate” into design. It’s the manta ray. This way a synthesis was made to combine my design vocabulary with the fabric’s hightech functionality. Men become part of the interaction between technology and nature, men become the link between these two parts, you can feel and experience wearing the jacket.

Next week we’ll continue with part two of the interview. Meanwhile you can have a look on the Manta Color Morph by Utope and polychromelab here in our webshop. In this post we talked about the Manta Color Morph reversible jacket for women and men.

Alpine Jacket for Via Ferrata

Customer Wears Alpine Jacket for Mountaineering

A happy customer send us mail of his mountain sports activities from Brenta-Dolomites, Italy. It’s always nice to get some feedback for one’s work:

Dear polychromelab,

I’ve bought Alta Verde Alpine Jacket this summer mostly for mountain sports activities. After testing it at home under rainy weather conditions, I was sure that I’ll always stay dry wearing this jacket. So I tested the jacket on a via ferrata in Brenta-Dolomites. My expectations were fully met. There was no need to change jackets and apparel when weather conditions were changing, no exhausive sweating, long story short – everything was to my convenience. I wish your team all the best with your great apparel concept. Greetings from Germany!

Choosing the Right Mountaineering Apparel

Summer, sun and mountains! It’s time for hiking, climbing and mountaineering. But even when the sun is shining, in the mountains weather can change unexpectedly in no time. One little shower and the day is ruined. Therefore it is important to choose the right apparel for mountaineering.

On via-ferrata-dolomites.com there’s a check list with the right mountain sports apparel you need. Especially it is important to wear windbreak apparel that is at the same time breathable so there’s no unnecessary sweating. Additionally one should wear waterproof apparel, so concentration can be upheld in rainy weather conditions. Polychromelab Alta Verde Alpine Jacket combines these exact two aspects: the jacket is windproof and breathable and waterproof as well. This way an extra layer of clothing can be saved. Our customer Reiner only can recommend this concept.

If you’re interested in the Alta Verde Alpine Jacket just have a look at it in our onlineshop.

Tyrol Future Day 2016

Starting into Tyrol’s Future Day 2016

We last were on an exhibition some time ago, so we were really excited to be part of Tyrol’s strategic Future Day 2016. Innovative companies from Tyrol and groundbreaking research projects from Tyrol’s academic schools were in the centre of attention at this event. Here’s the video “Leading by Research and Development” with some impressions from Tyrol’s Future Day 2016.

Leading by Research and Development

Being a part of this ensamble of economy and research comes naturally to us. Since the founding of polychromelab we followed a two track strategy: Design, manufacturing and sale via polychromelab’s online shop and store in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis on the one hand, empirical research and structured product development in the Alpine Proof Outdoor Lab on the other hand. Unfortunately, as it is in modern times, one has less time to make one’s statement and this is why customers often get our two track strategy. So we were very happy about the fact that there was plenty of time and interest on Tyrol’s Future Day at Congress Igls to present our mission for the future of polychromelab (and apparel).

Innovation Tailoring in the New Office

It is not for nothing that this press statement was released: Starting august, the “innovationg tailoring polychromelab”, like they’re fondly calling us, has its new office in skiing region Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis. Moving means a lot of work to do, especially moving an high altitude research lab from one place to another, on which we’ve reported a few weeks ago. But this wasn’t the only challenge we had to manage, additionally we had to build our new office TexStyleKitchen.

This name isn’t made up out of thin air: In a former inn on Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis’ sun plateau we’re renovating at the moment. Coincidentally we temporarily stored alpine jackets in the former kitchen of the inn. The name almost was perfect, but the special pronouncation of “style” should spell out that we’re not only engineer functional textiles, but also flavour our soup with a great amount of style and design.

You’ll find the latest updates on renovation of TexStyleKitchen on our facebook page.

Roccia Rossa Hybrid Jackets and their Rocky Trail

Moving to Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis: Innovative Hybrid Jackets are Breaking Trail

2009 concept, 2010 first prototype, 2011 first awards, 2012 foundation, 2013 first store and webshop, 2014 textiles research Alpine Proof, 2015 first relocation. This is a brief history of polychromelab so far. In part one of our way to Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis we presented our Store Ski Manufacture, in part two we talked about Alpine Proof. In part three we’d like to concentrate on the rocky trail Roccia Rossa hybrid jackets had to break.

Part 3: From Prototype to Flagship

This shouldn’t sound arrogant, we’d only like to point out difficulties innovative startup companies have to hurdle to establish their products on the market – which we luckily managed.

hybridjacken onlineshop trailrun polychromelab

It all started with the concept of a black silver hybrid jacket, that warms one the black side and cools on the silver one. Without financial support we wouldn’t have managed to build the first prototype which is necessary to win awards to convince the critical mass. We took this step with black silver Alta Quota hybrid jackets to win Outdoor Industry Award 2012.

But a concept that may be ever so groundbreaking will not establish on the market without being developed further: so a black silver jacket solely would be a little bit boring for good. So we asked ourselves, is their a chance to transfer this principle of reflection and absorption to different colours? Maybe not to every colour, but within a consistent research process and supported by first incomes we were able to design Roccia Rossa hybrid jackets.

Roccia Rossa hasn’t won ISPO Award 2014 in vain: Nowadays a combination of design and functionality, authenticity and innovation is essential. Roccia Rossa hybrid jackets is adapted to red rocks (thus the Italian name “Roccia”) in Tyrolean alps. Functionality is ideal for outdoor sports. Its design makes this hybrid jackets suitable for every day. As a consequence ISPO Award 2014.

Now we’re on our way to Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis, where we’ll focus our competences to take the next step. Because in a few years what we achieved until now won’t be enough. This is the rocky trail of innovation.
